Nature Connection

Nature Connection

Mariposa’s K-8 Nature Program fosters a sense of awe and appreciation for the natural world and our place in it. We aim to give students regular experiences in nature and build on their sense of self from within. We provide opportunities for children to explore their natural surroundings and foster their sense of curiosity through organic play, nature education, and skills development. Our students are stewards of the earth and we believe that when we teach them to love the earth, they will want to take care of her.

Nature Connection

  • In grades K-3 the vision is to embody Nature Connection through many hands on and teacher led experiences that foster a feeling of awe and reverence for the natural world. This is the time to build up the sit spot and have a lot of free exploring time in nature.

  • In grades 4-5 the vision is to embody Nature Education, in addition to the Nature Connection already being fostered. This includes outings with naturalists who can guide students to understanding plants, ecology, and the science behind our great planet's beauty. Teacher led walks continue to building on the sit spot experience through mapping, bird language, and more.

  • In grades 6-8 the vision is to embody Nature Experiences in addition to Nature Connection and Nature Education. This model will be about learning how to live on the earth through experiencing basic ancestral skills and crafts. The goal is to have a regular guide to lead such adventures. Teacher led walks are included as well as naturalist led hikes. Extended sit spots provide opportunities to dive deeper into the beauty of what it means to sit in nature for prolonged periods of time.

“We do not see nature with our eyes, but with our understandings and our hearts.” ― William Hazlitt
